I found the first and easiest swap to make were bathroom products, luckily living in Canada, Lush exists! Lush is a fresh handmade cosmetic company that sells everything needed in zero packaging! It’s been very easy to swap out my face wash, shampoo and conditioner to their package free products. They’re also made from natural, real ingredients rather than chemicals and unknowns.
Living in Guelph around January made it a little difficult to get access to a “Zero waste” shop, however I learned very soon that bulk barn sells similar items! Bulkbarn has been a great place to walk in with my containers and fill out anything from pasta, candy, flour, and even tea! Switching some of my kitchen products has also helped me a lot in generating less waste, I was gifted beeswax wraps and has been great in wrapping veggies and breads, as well as using many, many mason jars to store food, drink of, and use as measuring cups!
During my internship at IBM, and living in Markham (with such unreliable public transportation) I have taken it as a chance to get a bike (first bike i’ve owned!). While the 9km (one way) bike rides to work were intense at first, giving my body proper resting times between every 3-4km helped ease and soon the rides felt pretty normal and light.
While I wouldn’t say i’m a super perfect zero-wastee, this journey has still been a work in progress I would say this has been an enjoyable 7 months. It has defenitely given my a different perspective of how to enjoy my free time, and feels great when you only have to take out is your compost every week at home.
